History - Espresso
Contrary to popular belief, espresso is not a type of coffe bean, it is not a way of roasting the beans, nor is it a type of ground coffee (although many merchants do have an espresso grind). Espresso is a beverage prepared from coffee beans that have been ground to a fine consistency, nearing powder. Most importantly espresso in its true form must be brewed following a particular method and using certain machinery. A comprehensive history of the use of the term espresso is probably a fitting subject for a book, however enough detail to give you a working knowledge of what you're talking about when the using term can be found by following this link to the Espresso Idiot's succinct history of espresso.

History - Coffee
Coffee, that wonderful stuff that is second only to oil as the world's most traded commodity. Often associated with South America, some frequently go so far as to suggest that coffee originated there. This is wrong. Coffee is widely accepted as having originated in Ethiopia and spread to the rest of the world from there. Again, the history of coffee would be enough to fill a book, however for the Espresso Idiot's condensed version of a history of coffee, follow the link below.
